With Dubai International Airport's Northern runway 12L/30R nearing the end of its designed lifespan and therefore requiring rehabilitation and upgrading, Emirates (EK) has outlined its planned service reduction set to come into effect from May 1, 2014 and ending July 20, 2014. The following list contains the affected African flights:
Dubai – Cairo
Reduces from 2 to 1 daily (EK923/924)
Dubai – Cape Town
Reduces from 2 to 1 daily (EK770/771)
Dubai – Johannesburg
Reduces from 3 to 2 daily (EK765/766)
Dubai – Lagos
Reduces from 2 to 1 daily (EK783/784)
Dubai – Nairobi
Reduces from 2 to 1 daily (EK721/722)
Dubai – Seychelles
Reduces from 12 to 7 weekly (EK707/708)
The runway rehabilitation project will involve the placement of 180,000 tonnes of asphalt on the northern runway, 65,000 tonnes of asphalt and 70,000 cubic metres of concrete on the southern runway and taxiways as well as the installation of 3,000 runway lights.
