Airbus Maps Out Future for A330

As Airbus handed over the 1,000th A330 to Cathay Pacific Airways last Friday, it confirmed plans to accelerate introduction of the 242-metric-ton maximum takeoff weight model and to offer a new, lower operating weight, shorter-range “regional” variant. The twin-aisle twinjet has enjoyed a renaissance in recent years, partly benefitting from Boeing 787 delays and also, Airbus officials believe, from carriers reconsidering its operating economics against those of the new U.S. design. “We’ve sold more A330s since the 787 was launched than before,” said Airbus COO for customers John Leahy.

Private Jet Owners And Nigeria’s Aviation Industry

In recent years, an assortment of executive jets, helicopters and other private aircraft have appeared at airports across Nigeria. But the causes and consequences of this aviation trend are not quite as obvious as they might seem. Nigeria’s commercial airlines generally remain in a parlous state, while the country’s airline sector is perhaps among Africa’s most underdeveloped. Last year’s Dana Air crash in Lagos, which killed 163 people, forced the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to suspend Dana’s operating licence. Just a few months later, Air Nigeria, a larger airline owned by billionaire Jimoh Ibrahim, collapsed under an unsustainable debt burden.

The extract lists the various changes, including carriers that have now been either certified or struck off the countries' respective verified operator's lists, that each regulatory authority has implemented with respect to EU & ICAO minimums.

National Carrier to Begin Operations with 50 Aircraft

The federal government and its private investor partners may have concluded that the new national carrier, known as Nigeria One, would start operation with 50 aircraft that would be delivered before the end of next year.

Among the aircraft types that would be operated by the national airline include Embraer, Bombardier and Boeing.

THISDAY gathered from authoritative sources on Wednesday that while Embraer short haul aircraft types would be used for domestic operations, medium haul Bombardier would be used for regional services and Boeing planes would be used for long haul international flights.
All these aircraft would be delivered from the manufacturers, but it is not known yet whether they would be leased or they would be acquired by outright purchase.

Animated Video...The most detailed and realistic look at the Asiana Air 214 crash landing at San Francisco

A new “forensic animation”, made by Eyewitness Animationas and published by several media outlets, provides the most detailed and realistic look (in terms of airspeeds, altitudes, etc. ATC audio recordings are not synchronized), of the crash landing of Asiana Air 214 at San Francisco.

The animation is particularly interesting as it also shows the path the plane should have taken and the path it did take as it crash landed on runway 28L at KSFO on Jul. 6, 2013.
The animation shows the plane getting below the glide path and the pilot pulling up when it’s already too late to recover: the main landing gear hits the sea wall and the tail detaches from the plane.
Then, the left engine breaks away from the wing and the plane becomes airborne once again as it yaws and slides on the grass.

How to Survive a Plane Crash

Your chances of surviving an airplane crash, like the recent crash of Asiana Airlines Flight 214 at San Francisco International Airport, are surprisingly good.

More than 95 percent of the airplane passengers involved in a crash survive, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Despite this reassuring statistic, many people adopt a fatalistic attitude toward plane crashes — which can result in a dangerous level of apathy, especially regarding preflight safety briefings.
