UGANDA: Qatar, Uganda sign an Open Skies treaty.

The State of Qatar, represented by the Qatari Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA) and the Republic of Uganda have revised their previous Bilateral Air Services Agreement with therecent signing of an Open Skies treaty effectively granting Qatar Airways (QR) unlimited frequencies (both passenger and cargo) to any destination in the Central African country. The agreement was signed in the Qatari capital, Doha, on August 26.

Signing on behalf of Qatar was the Vice chairman / Director of the Qatari Department of Air Safety, Mr. Ebrahim Abdulqader Al-Janahi, while Mr. Lalumba Kagawa, the Assistant commissioner in charge of Air Transport in the Ministry of Works and Transport, signed for the Republic of Uganda. 

At present, Qatar Airways is the sole operator of flights between the two countries with daily direct flights to Entebbe International Airport operated onboard an Airbus A320.

Kampala is understood to be in the process of resurrecting its defunct national carrier, Uganda Airlines, whose tentative route network will include international flights. Whether Qatar will feature on its list of destinations is unknown at this time.
