Aero to be appointed Nigeria's new national carrier?

Aero Contractors is in line to be designated Nigeria's official national carrier reports out of West Africa claim. Since being taken over by government's Assets Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) last year, Aero has been reorganized with Hugh Fraser appointed Chief Executive Officer earlier this year.

According to ThisDay, the appointment was due to have been made on Nigeria's National Day in October, around the same time Abuja was meant to launch its new national carrier, Nigeria One. However, for unspecified reasons, the announcement was deferred to a later date.
AMCON currently owns 60% of Aero while Legacy Holdings, a company owned by the Ibru family, holds the rest. It is stated that AMCON's holding in Aero is only temporary with its shares to be disposed of once the airline returns to viability. As national carrier, Aero would enjoy preferential rights or privileges accorded by the government for international operations. Air Nigeria was the country's last national airline prior to its collapse late last year.
