United Airlines ratifies labor deal with 28,000 workers

United Airlines (Antonio Perez / September 15, 2011)
United Airlines said Tuesday that 28,000 of its employees serving as fleet service, passenger service, reservation workers and storekeepers have ratified new labor deals.
United said the workers, represented by the International Association of Machinists, received pay and benefit “adjustments” but offered no further details. A deal struck this earlier year was rejected by the workers, which pushed negotiations into federal mediation.

The agreements run through 2016.

“The four-year struggle to reach an agreement with United has been historic and difficult,” said IAM District 141 in a statement. It said the union contracts were ratified Monday with support from “over 70 percent of the voting members.”

United also has reached a combined deal with pilots since it merged with Continental in 2010, and has separate agreements with flight attendants and technicians.
