Yesterday was quite eventful for plane spotters at Manchester Airport in the UK. A routine morning of arrivals and departures was dramatically overshadowed by the engine failure of a Thomas Cook Airbus A330-200 during the afternoon.
A couple of YouTube users have already posted their footage of the incident online, which shows the aircraft travelling down runway 23R at a high speed (around 110 knots) when a loud bang is heard. Around 325 passengers were onboard at the time, on their way to Punta Cana in the Dominic Republic.
According to media reports, the A330’s right hand engine (Trent 772) failed, with fire fighters arriving on the runway as a safety precaution. The aircraft was transported back to the terminal, from where passengers were asked to disembark while the engine and brakes were inspected by engineers.
The runway was temporarily closed, with some flights diverted to Liverpool John Lennon Airport as a result. Thomas Cook organised a replacement Airbus A330-200, which departed five hours after the initial incident.
“We can confirm that an incident took place at Manchester Airport regarding flight TCX314 during take-off to the Dominican Republic. The aircraft developed an engine fault and has returned to stand,” a spokesperson for Thomas Cook Airlines told the media.
"As a precaution, the airport emergency services attended the aircraft - but at no time were passengers or crew at risk. We’d like to thank our customers for their patience during the delay to their flight,” the airline continued.
